2018 1st Bimester Level 10 Homework Assignment
Hi! This is your homework assignment for this course. Don’t forget that you chose this assignment instead of a quiz, so it will count for 10% of your final grade. So please take it seriously.
This will be due by the end of week 5 of the course (Friday, February 9).
Please write your answer in the comments section below. Be sure to include your name and re-read your comments before posting them–review spelling and make sure everything makes sense!
Also, don’t copy and paste from anywhere. If you copy and paste any part of your answer from Wikipedia or anywhere else, I will be very disappointed and angry. When I die, my ghost will haunt your descendants.
So in other words, this should have your thoughts and ideas. Don’t copy and paste.
Here’s the assignment:
In class today each of you chose a quote.
In your comment, write a bit about the quote. Include the following minimum information (you can include more if you’d like):
1. Write the full quote, including the person who said it.
2. Does the quote use first, second, or zero conditional? How do you know?
3. In your own words, rephrase the quote (what’s the quote’s essential message or meaning?).
4. Do you agree or disagree with the quote? Explain. Is there a reason you chose this particular quote?
5. Do a bit of research about the person who said the quote. Then, close the research page or tab and in your own words, give a bit of general information about the person who said the quote. For this one, I’m not interested in normal biographical information like dates or places. I’m more interested in your impression of the person.
6. If you met the person who said your quote, what would you ask or say to him/her?
Again, no copying and pasting and only use your own words! Do a good job! Remember: if your assignment is crappy, it’ll be embarrassing since we might read and check these in class.
Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions.

“If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven”
(Jesus)
The quote uses first conditional, why ? At the beginin of the quote we can clearly see the use of If… simple present…. then will as future simple. Those are characteristics of first conditional
In my own words
Will be
“If you want to be a good person, go and help the ones who need it, you will be rewarded”
The meaning of the quote is to realize that some people need a hand from others who don’t.
I’m totally agree with the quote, why, because as I said some people need a hand, and what a good way to be a good person. If you help poor people, you will feel excellent. And that is a fact.
Jesus wrote the quote
The son of God our savior for most people around the world. He woke up from death and resurrect.
Millions of people believe in him, he is the way for everything, your problems your doubts your anguish etc..
Accept him as your savior and you will have eternal life
Jesus no matters what religion you be there is just one God
I think we all meet him, however; I will ask him, will you forgive me for all my sins ?
Hi Adrian,
It looks like the name field for your comment got weird, but I saw this was your comment. Thanks!
I only noticed a few small errors, but the one I wanted to point out is that you should just say “I agree,” and not add “am,” since agree is a verb.
Thanks again!
Ryan
If you’re going through hell, keep going.
(Wiston Churchill)
This quote use the zero conditional because the conditional and the result are both in present.
This quote invite us to never surrender, no matter how hard the situation becomes we have to keep trying because if you surrender you never overcome the situation and finally you will be lost and never fulfill your achieves.
I’m totally agree in my experience the road to top it’s through a heavy road, there isn’t any shortcut in our life and many times we will have to deal with hard situations or though decisions and we need to pick up the tab.
Winston Churchill who served as prime minister of Great Britain was a politician, military officer and a writer who wrote many famous quotes like i have chosen for this homework and he was know by many people like a big headache for Hittler during the WW II and this man had to deal with the most harder age of this war when the Germans bombed every day London so basically this man actually lived in a real hell and he kept facing Hitler until the end of the war.
Hi Jose!
Thanks–nice work! A few corrections:
I am agree–> I agree
This quote invite–> this quote invites
i–> I
most harder–> the hardest
See you in class,
Ryan
“If you are not afraid of dying there is nothing you cannot achieve” – Lao Tzu.
In this quote the author uses first condicional, I see the structure of fisrt condicional that we studied at class:
–If you are not (present tense) afraid of dying there is nothing you cannot (simple future) achieve–
The main thing that makes people not doing something or act in certain way is: the fear, so in the quote Lao Tzu said: if you don’t care die in the process of something (radical result) you can do anything (fight, raise your voice, dance, sing, do the work of you dreams, love the love of your life, defense your believes…), without any fear in your heart.
The reason why I choose this quote was thinking about Vikings, in their time, they were’not afraid of conquered new lands and expand their kingdom. When the Vikings think about die in battle, are mostly happy for be reuned with Odin and their relatives.
I’m agree with the message, is good to live without fear, no matter what.
About Lao Tzu, there are not many details about its existence and there are even those who doubt the real existence of this character. His name means: “old master”. Lao Tzu is considered the father of taoism, he wrote the book who inspired that religion. He proposed to follow the path of nature, without power or ambition.
Lao Tzu really looks like a amazing person. I would ask him, what made him live against the current.
Hi Diana,
Nice work! A few corrections:
If you don’t care die–> If you don’t care about dying
defense your believes–> defend your beliefs
choose–> chose
I’m agree with–> I agree with
Thanks, and good luck in your new job!
Ryan
“If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.”
Bruce Lee
It’s first conditional because it shows a possibility
Sometimes, our mental and physical capacity is devalued, and it it just under problematic circumstances when we realize that as humans we are capable of being and doing up to where we really want. We are ourselves the ones who put limits to our own abilities and capacities.
Our mind is very powerful, and whatever you think, whatever you believe comes true because you are attracting that, positive or negative, but you attract it.
I agree, the reason why I chose this phrase is because I felt identified, many times I have stopped believing in my ability to achieve my goals, and reading this inspires me to regain confidence in who I am and In what I do.
Bruce Lee started at a young age in the world of martial arts, consolidating in reference time and the best in his class. His legacy has left us his famous one inch punch that is able to knock down an enemy. On the other hand, he was a person with a very open mind, true to his beliefs and trying to overcome, urging those who surrounded him to be better. Today we have at our disposal a great amount of phrases that could help us think and see the world from a different perspective.
What advice would you say to someone who has no desire to live?
Hi Saray,
Great job! I understood everything, but there were a few awkward phrases, where you may have been translating from Spanish (like “e are ourselves the ones who put limits to our own abilities and capacities” or “I felt identified”). So just be sure to try to keep things simple and understandable, but in English 🙂
Now, we’ll be expecting you to do a demonstration of the one-inch punch in class!

If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and the voice will be silenced – Vincent Van Gogh
First Conditional because follow the structure If + Present simple… Will + Infinitive.
For me what Vincent is saying in this quote is that You cannot allow yourself to sabotage your dream just for fear of failure. You have to do it, in order to prove yourself and others what are you capable of.
I am my worst critic and sometimes I feel that I won’t be able to do some things. So I agree with this quote because in order to grow you must allow yourself to fail.
Vincent Van Gogh is known as one of the most influential artist . He became famous after his death. For Vincent painting was his mean of expression His works manifest his struggle against madness and the way he saw the world and himself.
If I met him, I would like to know what kind of fears he has, what problems he struggled with, I would like to understand his thoughts, to be able to give him the treatment he needs and learn more from him.
Hi Katherine,
Excellent work! I’d only mention to be careful about capitalization. Otherwise, great job!
Ryan
1.¨If you have no critics, you will likely have no success¨. Malcom X.
2.In this quote we can see the use of the first conditional and i know that because it is using ¨will¨, it means that we are thinking in future.
3. If a read this quote i´ll understand that nobody is perfect and we can´t see own mistakes. we will need friends, family, some people that tell us that something is wrong.
If you want to have success in your life, you will listen a lot of advice.
4.I agree because if i have a dream and i´m trying to get it i have to be myself but i will have to listen some advice on the way. Finally i will make a lot of decisions by myself.
5.Malcolm Little (Malcom X). was an afro-american that fought by their rigths and fredoom in U.S.A. He had a difficult life being a black men in U.S.A. Whith enemies, problems, living in the street whith its rules, but he never thougth that he was less that the withe people.
He was killed fighting for what he believed.
6.If i met him. i will ask him 2 questions.
a. What would you do if you were a white men?
b. Will you fight for the same?
Hello Danilo,
Good one! Be sure to capitalize “I” when using the pronoun, and be careful for capitalization in general (like in “Afro-American,” for example).
Thanks, and see you in class!

“You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want. – Zig Ziglar
In this quote, the first conditional is used, because talk about a real or possible situation. But, in this case the result is first (the result is written in a future tense -will-), and the condition is second (the condition is written in present tense).
This quote talk about a condition, it is a “give and take”, so the meaning of this quote is: If we provide help with dedication, giving the best of ourselves, we will soon obtain the benefit.
I chose this phrase because I agree with the author, we are able to face things better and see solutions more easily when someone gives us their help. It is a satisfaction to see the results, our benefit may not be immediately but the reward will come.
Our actions have too many consequences, which depend on our actions, so we should consider better what we think and what we do.
His real name was Hilary Hinton Ziglar, but he was named “Zig”, he was a professional motivator, an exceptional speaker and wrote some amazing books. Someone who achieved success and learned based on their experience.
If he were alive and I had the opportunity to meet him I would say I admire him because not only did he have great ideas and solutions, he presented all the time with energy, humor, and enthusiasm. And then I will ask him: If you had the same problems, you would choose this job?
Hi Diana,
Excellent work! You did a great job here, so keep up the good work!
Ryan
Music doesn’t lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music. -Jimi Hendrix.
It uses second conditional because the verb “changed” is in past tense and the phrase “then it can only happen” shows a posibility in the future from a the past that it’s not true actually.
The meaning of the quote is that music express the reality, the context when it was created. So if you want to know what is happening in the world you just have to listen to the message of the music of the moment.
I choose this quote because I share this meaning, I truly believe that music is an universal language that shows how we are feeling and thinking in an specific moment…. and because Jimi is an inspiration for me .
Who was Jimi? Well, he was one of the brightest musician of the world, he played guitar like no one else did it before, he also develop his own technique and style, specially using the wah wah pedal. Jimi started playing guitar in some bars and small scenarios until someone discovered him and took him to bigger shows, he even played with one of the biggest musicians of the era, the famous Eric Clapton and after that his career grew like foam and Jimi became one of the biggest guitarist player and singer in the world.
If I were in front of him right now I would like to ask him how he composed the music of his songs to sound always similar but never the same. I guess it is just feeling but I would like to ask him anyway.
Hi Pablo!
Thanks for a great, complete answer! Just two notes:
The quote is actually either zero or first conditional, not second, since the verb in the condition is in the present. But you still got the idea of it.
And the word would be “stage,” not “scenario” (a scenario is a situation).
Good work!
Ryan
“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan”. – Jim Rohn
The phrase uses first conditional, because it expresses a real posibility in the future.
For me, what this phrase means is that you have to make your own decisions to achieve your goals, beacuse if you let someone else do it, they will use you to achieve their goals.
I agree with the quote, because you must be responsible for your own life and don’t expect for others to solve your problems.
About Jim Rohn, apparently he was a very succesful man and entrepreneur even though he left the college, it seems that every succesful guy in this world have done that (Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, etc). Anyway, is great to see how someone with a clear idea can become in such a succesful person, even without finishing the university.
If a met Jim Rohn, I would ask him for advice about business, because he was real good mentor for other entrepreneurs.
Hi Luis,
Super work! I’d only note that “every” is singular, so it should say “every successful guy in this world HAS done that…”
Otherwise, excellent job!
Ryan
