Elvis Week
As a joke, I told my class on Monday that it was “Elvis Week” since I wanted to do a few activities with Elvis songs in class. Well, the joke was on me, since Elvis Week actually exists–and since Elvis Week is NOW! (Yes, that coincidence is a bit scary.)
So, to commemorate Elvis week, I thought I’d include a few interesting Elvis things in this post. It will also give you a chance to practice your English. And if you want to read more about Elvis, check out this page.
In the 90s in the US, they voted on an Elvis stamp. I would have voted for Old Elvis.
First of all, here’s a really nice song that Elvis sang called Always On My Mind. Watch the video and read the lyrics–can you notice the use of Perfect Modals (check here for more information about them):
Next, I have an Elvis quote that I want to share. It also has an activity. For the blank spaces, look at the clues below the quotation to try to complete it. I’ll include the answers in the complete quote on Sitzman ABC’s Facebook page later today or tomorrow:
“I don’t regard ______(1) or position ______(2) important. But I can ______(3) ______ (4) the longing to be ______(5). I guess if you are ______(6), you always think ______(7) and want ______(8) than those who ______(9) everything when they are ______(10).”
“Forever Elvis,” Time, May 7, 1965
1. Rhymes with “honey”
2. Similar to “ass,” but with /z/ instead of /s/
3. Opposite of “always”
4. Opposite of “remember”
5. Opposite of “nobody”
6. Synonym for “impoverished”
7. Comparative form of “big”
8. Antonym of “less”
9. Pronounced /hæv/, not /hæf/
10. Rhymes with ”corn”
Now, for all you food lovers out there, I wanted to include a little information about Elvis’ favorite sandwich! It’s sometimes called “Fool’s Gold” or just “The Elvis,” but apparently he was eating these things a LOT. I’d not recommend eating as many as Elvis did, since he ate enough calories to kill 2 horses (or 1 Elvis), but it is interesting. From AllRecipes.com, here’s a recipe to make the sandwich:
Finally, I want to share a really good Elvis song. I don’t want to say it’s my favorite Elvis song, since I like a lot of his songs a lot. But this one has a good beat, and it’s a nice, fast love song. Enjoy!
Thanks for reading, and enjoy Elvis Week!
