Intensive Course Assignment 1
Hi everyone! Here’s your first assignment for this term. Please read it carefully and post your answer in the comments section below. Be sure to check your answer for grammar, spelling, etc. before posting. Let me know if you have any questions or problems.
INTENSIVE COURSE ASSIGNMENT #1:
Today in class you all chose a quotation that used a conditional. In your comment, please write about the quotation you chose. Include the following information (you can write more if you want):
1. What was the quote, and who said it?
2. Rephrase the quote (put it in your own words). What do you think it means? What made you interested in this particular quote? Do you agree with it? Why or why not?
3. Does the quote use zero, first, or second conditional? How can you tell?
4. Find some information about the person who said the quote. In your own words (if you copy and paste from Wikipedia, I’ll have my cats attack you) tell a bit about what you learned about the person. If you could have a conversation with him/her, what would you say or ask him/her?
You can also include anything else you’d like that’s related to the quote, the author, etc.
Thanks!

The quote: If you don’t designó your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan.
– Jim Rohn
I think that I need to plan my life with my goals, my studies, and my future because If I don’t design my own life plan someone will copy my plans.
The conditional is the First Conditional
Structure: If+simple present+ will+ verb
The quote have don’t that is in present and you’ll that is in future.
Jim Roh born in September 17,1930 in Yakima, Washington
He was a buisnessman and autor.
When he was 31 years old, he was millionare because his friend Shoaff did someone buisnes but Shoaff died before they fishished the buisness and Rohn continious with the job.
Rohn died in December 5, 2009 in Los Angeles, CA
The cause of the death was a pulmonary fibrosis.
The questions for Rohn are:
What are you going to do with the money?
Are you going to help charities?
the quote: If you hear a voice within you say: you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.-Vincent Van Gogh
I think is important when you belive in yourself because when you try to do somenthing new in your life, you listen some voices that they say you cannot do it, but when you do it they remain silent. is not important what the others say, the most important are when you think that you can do it and you work strong, and your life change.
the conditional is the first, it expresses a possible condition and probable result in the future.
Vincent Van Gogh was painter, the color was the chief symbol of epression, art helped him stay emotionally balance, paintings were expressing a lot of melancholy and depression ,He struggled with mental illness, Van Gogh died en france on July 29, 1890 at age 37, He killed himself because he couldn’t stand more hallucinations
The question for Van Gogh:
What do you feel when you paint?
Which are your favorite paintings ?
this is other quote that I like:
“I put my heart and soul into my work, and I have lost my mind in the process.”
― Vincent van Gogh
“Music doesn´t lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.” – Jimi Hendrix
I think the music expresses thoughts, ideas and feelings that many do not know how to express so come to write a song in expressed. With them they give their opinions not only of love but of society, they disclose the truth of what many do not want to see.
I like the quote because the music describes what you are feeling or going at the time.
I like, because i like to listen to music and think if they want to express their feelings, they will wrte a song.
FIRST CONDITIONAL:
If + simple present + will + verb
Jimi Hendrix was born in November 27, 1942 in Seattle, Washington.
It was musican and songwriter.
It was consedered one of the best and most influential guitarist of the popular music one of the most important twentieth century.
He began his success in Europe with his band The Jimi Hendix Experience, and achieved fame in the United States After A concert in 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival.
Stressful presentations led them to used drugs. At first, they used them for pleasure, then it became an addiction.
He died on September 18, 1970 with 27 years.
Questions:
What did you enjoy when you were a musician?
What did recommend me if i were a musician?
If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no Limits.
–Bruce Lee
The quote in my own words:
Every single day you will find situations, feelings or people that represent a limitation in your life, maybe because you are disappointed, tired, angry or just sad, or right now you don´t have all the things that you need to work or to study. But, if you put all those things first, you will never do your best because your complaints will affect your life or your job. Always!
My opinion about this Bruce Lee quote:
I was interested in this quote because it is absolutly true. Limits are just in your mind, if you don´t believe in yourself nobody is going to belive in your skills. When you have a dream or a goal in your life, you need to work on it, look for the opportunities, and begin to work with love and passion. Your thoughs will define you, If you think that you can´t do it, you will be a loser unless that you change your mind. I really agree with Bruce Lee!
Conditional:
Firts Conditional, because the If clause is a possible fact and the Main Clause is a probable condition that is written in simple future.
Biography:
Bruce Lee had a short life, he died at the age of 32 in 1973, However he became in an iconic martial arts expert as well as a film and television actor. His biography caught my attention because all his live was a fight, and it was split between Hong Kong and The United States (US), when he was just a child he began appeared in 20 films as a child actor and began to learned kung fu and took dance clases but at the same time he suffered discrimination in the school by his accent. However, at the edge of 19 years old, return to US to studied philosophy major at the University of Washington. Then he opened his own three martial-arts school and began to taught Jeet Kune Do, or “The Way of the Intercepting Fist.”
As an actor, Lee gained a measure of celebrity with his role in the television series. By the end of 1972, he moved back with his family to Hong Kong to becaming a major movie star in Asia, because in US he didn´t get any success as an actor, he was rejected and criticized.
In Asia his greatest achievement was co-founded, with Raymond Chow, his own company, Concord Productions, and had released his first directorial feature, Return of the Dragon. On July 20, 1973, just one month before the premiere of Enter the Dragon, Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong, China.
He never considered his problems as a limitation, he became his problems in opportunities to be the best versión of himself.
If I could ask a question to him, I would ask:
1. ¿What advice would you give to the Young people who have big dreams and aspirations but after many attempts have not been succesful?
2. ¿What was the biggest inspiration in your life?
3. ¿What was your formula to be a disciplined and consistent person?
The quote:
”If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month”
-Theodore Rooselvelt.
My opinon about the quote:
For me Theodore Roosevelt’s quote refers: you could be too busy kicking and blaming the people responsible of your problems or you could be too busy solving and improving the troubles, it is your decision and if it is not the life that you want you have only one place to look to find the culprit -the mirror.
The harsh reality is that we make choices, excuses and we make the life that we have.
Conditional:
Second Conditional because he was thinking about a situation in the present or future that is hypothetical, unlikely or impossible.
If + Past Simple, …Would + Verb.
Biography:
Theodore Roosevelt (October 27, 1858–January 6, 1919) was born in New York into one of the old Dutch families which had settled in America in the seventeenth century. At eighteen he entered Harvard College and spent four years there, dividing his time between books and sport and excelling at both.
In 1884, because of ill health and the death of his wife, Roosevelt abandoned his political work for some time. He invested part of the fortune he had inherited from his father in a cattle ranch in the Badlands of Dakota Territory, expecting to remain in the West for many years.
President Harrison, after his election in 1889, appointed Roosevelt as a member of the Civil Service Commission of which he later became president.
Elected governor of the state of New York in 1898, he invested his two-year administration with the vigorous and businesslike characteristics which were his hallmark.
Roosevelt was an historian, a biographer, a statesman, a hunter, a naturalist, an orator. His prodigious literary output includes twenty-six books, over a thousand magazine articles, thousands of speeches and letters.
In 1919, at the age of sixty, he died.
Questions:
What would you do, kick the person in the pants or solve your troubles?
Are you going to kick someone’s pants or you are going to be the person with the beaten pants?
Caro, that biography looks copied. My cats need to have a word with you. 🙁
1. My quote was “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.” By Meister Eckhart.
2. In my own words, the phrase said that when you are a grateful person, it will be enough to be a happy. I think that the gratitute is one of the most important attitudes that you would have because it makes you aprecciate the good things in your life and see the bad ones as a opportunity to became in a better person. I am totally agree with the autor because this life is not only about to ask to God, is also about to be thankful for everything.
3. This quote uses first conditional because represented a real and probable situation. Also, the condition is written in simple present and the result is using future:
Condition in presente: If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you…
Result in future: … it will be enough
4. Meister Eckhart biography:
Meister Eckhart was born in Germany in 1260. His real name was Eckhart von Hochheim, but received the title “Meister” because he was philosopher, theologian and worked in the Dominican Order.
Some of his work is used yet to explicate topics as the nature of God, The Trinity, the relationship between the human soul and God, and others Christian process. Because of his lessons about the controversial topics in that era, he was considered an heretic person.
He died in 1328.
If I could talk with Meister Eckhart, I definitely would ask him what think about the relationship between human and God.
1- The quote I chose was “If you are going through hell, keep going” and Winston Churchill said it.
2- For me, this quote means that it doesn´t matter how hard are the things you´re passing by or how difficult are the moments in your life, you have to be strong and confront them with bravery and discipline. Because even in hell you can be strong. I was interested in this quote because I love to work as hard as I can and to face the obstacles until I can win. Of course I´m agree with the quote, first because I think Winston Churchill said just the truth and second because if you hard, you will reach whatever you want.
3- The quote I chose is in Zero Conditional because the whole quote is in present to represent something that is real (If you are passing a hard situation you can´t stay in it, you need to move out of it). This quote is written in present continous “If you´re going through hell,” and finishes with simple present “keep going”.
4- Winston Churchill´s bio: He was a British stateman, he was born on November 30 in 1874 and died on January 24 in 1965. Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a historian, a writer, and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was the Prime Minister of the UK from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955.
If I could have a conversation with Winston Churchill I would ask him how he became in that smart person he was. I also would like to ask him if there were a personal reason for him that made he said the quote I´m talking about.
The quote that I chose was “If you can dream it, you can do it” by Walt Disney.
I know that look like a simple quote but is very interesting. On my own words the quote means that doesn’t matter the problems, situations or things in the life that affect your life, you always need to move forward and try to do the things you like or you want to do.
I’m was very interested in this quote, because the person who said it, was very talented and successful, and that success it may have been for that way of thinking.
Also I am a hundred percent agree with Walt, always we need to fight for ours dreams.
The quote use zero conditional, this conditional is used when the result will always happen, like a scientific fact.
If + present simple… Present simple.
Walt Elias Disney was a producer, director, screenwriter and animator. He was born in 1901, Chicago, Illinois, USA, and he died in 1966. The cause of death was lung cancer.
One of the most important person in the child animation industry. He and his brother co- founded The Walt Disney Company.
He and his staff created lot of famous cartoons like Duck Donald, Mickey Mouse and Duffy.
Himself was the original voice for Mickey, and in all his life won lot of awards like the Academy awards, Oscar awards, Emmy awards. Also he gave his name to Disneyland and Walt Disney World, theme parks in the U.S and around the world.
If I could have a conversation with him, I would ask how he began with the idea of the cartoons and I would try to understand the brilliant mind that he had.
Pablo Vasquez
1. The quote that I chose was “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree” by Martin Luther.
2. In my opinion this quote means that even if thing are difficult don’t lose the hope and be faithfully because things can change and never give up on something keep working until the end and you will be proud of yourself. I think this quote is real because it’s the attitude that every person should have in all bad situations thinking positive and never stop fighting for your dreams even it seems impossible to make it never give up. This quote also means for me that we should enjoy every day of life until de last minute and don’t postponing happiness
3. The quote I chose is in second conditional because it’s something that probably are not going to be true so structure is (if + past simple + would + present simple).
4. Martin Luther King Jr bio: Martin was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. King, both a Baptist minister and civil-rights activist, had a seismic impact on race relations in the United States, beginning in the mid-1950s. Among many efforts, King headed the SCLC. Through his activism, he played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens in the South and other areas of the nation, as well as the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, among several other honors. King was assassinated in April 1968, and continues to be remembered as one of the most lauded African-American leaders in history, often referenced by his 1963 speech, “I Have a Dream.”
5. I would ask Martin Luther King Jr that what was his biggest fear in life and also I would ask him what was his inspiration to do all things he made through his life.
1- My quote was ” if you have no critics you´ll likely have no success. By Malcom X
2- This quote is about to be a success person and that if you want to be a success person you have to accept all the critics that people make in your life or in your job for example because sometimes is a positive crtic and also negative bouth will make you a better person.
3- if you accept all critics you will be a success person
4-The quote is in first conditional because is something that is possible now or in the future.
5-I´m agree with the quote because I think is true we always have critcs in our life, and we just have to take them to improve our selfs with people critics and also our mistakes.
6- Malcom X : he was born in february 21 in 1965
he was a prayer and also a minister, he deffended the color people rights.
he lived in Nebraska
