Monday Level 9.5 Assignment 1
Hi everyone,
This is the first homework assignment for my Monday class, level “9.5” (the one that combined people from level 9 and level 10). If that’s not you, you don’t need to worry about it–but everyone is welcome to participate if you’d like!
LEVEL 9.5 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT #1
We’ve been talking about perfect modals in class, and if you were from level 10, then you’ve probably talked about them even more in previous courses.
If you want a review of what perfect modals are and how they work, I also have this post on here on my website. Check it out if you’d like.
For this assignment, I want you to:
1. Choose a music video. It’s better if the video tells a kind of story, because then you can make perfect modal sentences more easily.
2. Write your assignment in the comments area below. Put a link to the video, so that I and others can find it.
3. Then, write at least 10 sentences about the video using perfect modals. Check your answer carefully for grammar, spelling, and vocabulary before posting. We may check them together in class, just so you know.
That’s it!
As an example, I’ll share this video and give you a few sample sentences:
For this video, I could say some sentences like:
1. The boy saying the Pledge of Allegiance might have been a younger version of the singer playing the piano, because they have the same hair style.
(In this sentence, I think it’s a possibility)
2. This video must have taken place at a private school, since all of the students are wearing matching uniforms.
(In this sentence, I think this is the most probable explanation)
3. I should have continued learning how to play the piano. If I had, I could have started a band with my buddies and become famous like these guys.
(In this sentence, I’m reacting to the past, and imagining doing something differently)
4. The boy could have gotten in trouble for trying to cheat on the exam.
(In this sentence, he didn’t actually get in trouble–the teacher didn’t see him. But I’m imagining a different, unreal result of something that happened in the past)
There’s an example with each of the phrasal verbs we’ve been working on. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

Hi Naomy,
Thanks for your sentences. We’ll try to check them in class so everyone can see the corrections, but the biggest thing I notice is to be sure to capitalize the first word of a sentence, and to end it with punctuation.
Also, be prepared to explain these a bit more with some context.
Good work, and thanks for doing it so quickly, though!
