Wednesday Advanced Class Assignment 2
I hope you’re doing well. I got behind on things and forgot to post this assignment. We went over it a bit in class, but I’d like to go into a bit more detail in this assignment.
Assignment #2
Since we were talking about different cultural values and behaviors, I would like you to tell a bit more about some of the behaviors that you observed in the last week, as well as what cultural values you think those behaviors represent.
For example, you could say that you saw a man wearing a soccer jersey at a wedding, and that that action may have represented the cultural value of informality.
The point is to think about the world we live in and to examine some of the cultural assumptions that we sometimes take for granted.
Please identify at least 5 behaviors and at least guess at what values you think they represent. If you have any questions, let me know. Otherwise, see you in class!

1-A person arriving late to class. It shows the bad concept of time most people have.
2-A woman making the sign of the cross as she walks in front of the church. It represents the devotion to religion.
3-Popular sayings like “mae” and “pura vida”.
4- Giving nicknames to everyone.
5-Looking for the cheapest place to go/eat.
Hey Julian,
Nice start, but what do you think 3, 4, and 5 represent or say about Costa Rican culture? Where’d you observe them?
1) When people do what every one does. They are not originally.
2) The hypocrisy. Demonstrates the lies and deceit.
3) In the highscools the students never present the works at time, It shows the iresponsability.
4) That, MANY people work for the good of the others. It shows solidarity.
5) Religious indifference, people think they can do things without God they’re wrong.
6) When people of the best economy condition can help the poor ones and don’t do it shows the selfishness.
Hi Stephanie,
This is also a good start, but I’m wondering where and when you saw these. I’m looking for specific examples. The explanations seem good, though.
1. the people in costa rica used white cloth.
2. once i see someone using red dress in her wedding i think she is from India.
3. In some culture they see offensive to eat cow.
4. Normally in our culture is nice to have a dinnner with the family in chrismas in other cultures they might like to dance instead of eat.
5. In some religions they dont belive in one god they bealive in many
Maria,
These are sort of behaviors, but I don’t think you actually observed them last week (since it wasn’t Christmas last week). Get a few more details and make sure they’re specific. Also, check your answers for spelling, word choice, punctuation, etc.
Ryan
sorry
1. the people in costa rica is normal to wear white cloth in the WEDDING
1) A girl that tend to arrive late to everywhere. That shows irresponsability.
2) A young man calling “mae” the boy next to him. That shows that the young man knows and trusts boy.
3) When costaricans find out that something is free, they take all they can. That shows costarricans are shameless.
4) A man smoking in a public place. That shows indiference.
5)A woman crying in the funeral of his husband. That shows that the man was really important for the woman.
Hi Mari,
OK, although these aren’t really specific. Where did you see them?
Also:
1. tends; irresponsibility
3. Costa Ricans
5. her husband
When the ticos said ”Pura Vida” it show that people are in good ”health”.
The ticos said ”mae” it shows in the form of be calling someone that you don’t know that’s common in men.
Hey Milena,
I need more details…
1) We say a lot of words that we replace or change our language and a tourist doesn’t know what means
2) Teenagers like to modify their motorcycles and passing by the streets doing a big noise that is annoying.
3) People attending to a party and when they are drunk starting a fight with someone haha.
4) With friends is common get together in a house and watch a soccer game and bringing beers and snacks to enjoy the game.
Hi Jose,
You’re about halfway there. Where and when did you observe these behaviors?
Ryan
1. For example in the supermarket i saw the people don’t respect the rows.
2. The people always pick on the life the other people, for example always criticizes the appearance or the things that the people do.
3.some people have the bad habit use the cellphone while someone are talking, its disrespect!
4.The people that arrive always late.
5. People that doing something wrong and say that the fault was the others.
Hi Dani,
Thanks. This is a good start, but you don’t really talk about what values these actions represent. Also, are these real actions that you actually observed, or are you just describing general types of actions?
Ryan
