Wednesday Class Assignment 3
Last week in class we talked about culture, and each of you took home a quotation about culture. For your assignment, I’d like you to write a bit about your quotation. First, write the quote and who said it. Then, write some comments like:
-Do you agree or disagree with the quote? Explain.
-Put the quote in your own words.
-Do some research about the topic of the quote or the person who said it. Share some of the information you find (but don’t copy and paste).
-Share any other comments about the quote or the author, or culture in general.
Thanks!

Hi!
So, my quote was:
“Culture’s worth huge, huge risks. Without culture, we’re all totalitarian beasts.” – Norman Mailer
-I do think that this quote is true. If our country didn´t have culture, we would live literally like animals, with no rules, no religion, and no traditional foods or clothes; what would make us different from other countries?
-I actually think that this quote is pretty easy to understand, maybe what can be difficult is the thing about huge risks, for me, what he meant was that some people may not like our culture, or the way we act, but in the end, they have their own traditions and we may not like what they do.
-I found some information about the author:
°Norman Mailer was an American novelist who died on November 10, 2007. He was born in Long Branch, New Jersey.
°Norman wrote 12 novels.
-Thanks!
Hi Monserratt,
Thanks for your comment (the only one so far, I see!).
I also agree with the quote, and I also think it’s a bit confusing when he talks about risks. I guess I’d interpret as meaning that you have to take risks to preserve your culture sometimes, but I’m not sure if that’s what he meant.
Although for me, the more enigmatic part is about the totalitarian beasts. I’m still not 100% sure what to make of that.
Anyhow, good job! See you in class!
Ryan
The quote I got was:
“Culture is the sum of all the forms of art, of love, and of thought, which, in the course of centuries, have enabled man to be less enslaved” — Andre Malraux
I mostly agree with the quote, because we have developed such a huge compilation of literature, ideas, concepts, and so on, which we may call art. All of this come together to form what we know as culture and have granted us a little freedom of some sort according to the author, although, I think we are slaves of consumerism due to capitalism, which is just not sustainable for the planet.
To put the quote in my own words:
“Culture is basically every form of human expression driven by love and thought over the ages, to grant us the gift of freedom one step at a time”
Andre Malraux was born on november 3rd, 1901 and died november 23rd 1976. He was a french novelist, aventurer and politician, who some considered to be the very first writer in his generation, who managed to built in an effective manner his own mysticism.
Hi Alvaro,
Excellent work! I especially liked how you put the quote into your own words. Keep up the good work!
Ryan
