Week 1 Homework Assignment
Hello! I’ve been traveling a bit this week, so I hadn’t had a chance to post the first weekly homework assignment for my class. This first assignment is pretty basic:
WEEK 1 HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:
1. Read this article on the New York Times’ Learning Network site. It also has a link to this article, which has more details and a video. You can read that second article, too, if you have time.
2. Try to find three new or difficult vocabulary words in the article(s). Find a definition for them.
3. Leave a comment below on this post. That way, your classmates and I will be able to see and comment on your assignment. Your comment should include:
A. Your three vocabulary words, with explanations/definitions (in English, of course!)
B. Your answers to at least two of the discussion questions (see below)
C. Any other thoughts or comments
As I mentioned in point B, there are discussion questions for the article. They’re at the end of the first link, but for convenience’s sake, I’ll also include them here:
— Are you an Apple fan? Are you excited about the new Apple Watch? Do you think smartwatches will become mainstream?
— What other new technologies or tech toys, whether gaming systems, new phones, apps or anything else, are you excited about? Why?
— A recent article suggested that teenagers are less interested in spending money on clothes than they are on technology. Do you think that’s true? Why or why not?
— What is your favorite piece of technology? How does it enhance your life?
So, that’s it for this week. Tell me if you have any questions or comments. Good luck!

RUBEN RAMIREZ
I love technology and this new product from Apple is amazing,
very futuristic and comfortable.
however I think that this product at the moment will have very
little market and not be exploited to the fullest.
this type of articles will look great in movies but in real life it is very
difficult to query such a small screen, in addition to the care that
must be taken to avoid damaging it, people with very sloppy with
their watches
Are you an Apple fan?
I really am not, in my opinion and knowledge in the technology apple
products generally exeden much the prices of other brands have the
same characteristics.
even in my personal opinion and I bought parts to build a computer,
with a quarter of the cost of apple I built a computer with four
times the capacity of an actual
apple.
other more specific products I give my approval
What is
your favorite piece of technology?
I prefer the cell
first.
for me are the best invention, is the instrument that helps
us more and more during the day now with access to everything on
internet
new vocabulary
1 growing = increasing
2 profit. = benefit.
3 major = esencial
Hey Ruben,
Thanks for your comment, and welcome! You have good thoughts, but be careful for structure and just keeping the response “clean” (I mean like starting sentences with capital letters, and ending them with periods, for example).
Otherwise, nice work. See you in class!
Ryan
Fitness: It refers to your heart muscle. For example, The stronger your heart, the more fit you are.
Leadership: the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group.
Profit: money that is earned in trade or business, after playing the costs of producing and selling goods and services. For example, She makes a big profit from selling waste material to textile companies.
I´m not an apple fan and I have never been interested in new devices. Althougt I think that the new smartwatches are very cool and many apple fans are going to buy them, and that’s okay for me. We all have different opinios and tastes in technology.
I do think that teenagers are most interested in buying new devices than buying clothing. They all want to have the nicest Iphone, the nicest pieces of technology, and nowdays that’s a big and important part of our generation. We need to understand it, even if we know that technology is not the most important thing in this world.
For me, there are many other important things than new devices, like hanging out with my friends or family. Even thought, I know that technology has been helping our lives, making them easier.
Hi Yoryi,
Thanks for your comment, and welcome to the class! Great work!
See you this evening in class,
Ryan
Mainstream:
The ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as normal or
conventional; the dominant trend in opinion, fashion, or the arts. Example: The
Beatles were a musical mainstream in the 60s.
Accomplished: successfully
completed; achieved. Example: After some years of sacrifices, my brother accomplished
his goals, he become a doctor.
Display: to show something
or a collection of things in an organized way for people to see. Example: The Company
displayed the new smartphone the last week.
I’m not an apple fan,
however I think actually they are a mainstream, since Steve Jobs display the iPhone
in the market they grew up in a fast way and they become in one of the most
important and prestigious technology companies.
The reason why I am not an
apple fan probably it’s because i don’t understand the software at all, it’s
difficult and most of the time you must pay for the apps.
Related with the new watch
I am not very excited, first because like I said I am not an apple fan, and
then because for me is just a smaller version of the iPhone, but at the same
time its more expensive. I don’t think that this new device become a mainstream
or something like that.
Actually the video game
consoles are the most excited technologies for me, because I like a lot the
video games, and the developers of these consoles have mainly improve the
graphics and looks very realistic.
My favorite part of technology
is the internet, I think that internet it’s a very important tool for the
human, but you must know how to use it, because it could bring you a lot of
facilities, but at the same time if you use it in a bad way could be dangerous.
Hey Javier 2,
Good job! I also like the good examples for the vocabulary words.
See you in class tonight,
Ryan
Hi everybody!
Here are the words I found interesting
strapped. It means you can put it around your wrist. but and also its a slang take a look the e.g.
I’m a bit strapped for cash right now. can I pay you back next week?
I’m not an apple fan however, I’m always excited about technology devices.
these gadgets are made to have fun with them or to improve your life style in different ways some of them are like toys therefore, teens love it.
I’m more excited about robots because, twenty years ago people talked about it as a futuristic topic but, now a days there are companies such as honda which have develop an amazing robot called asimo. I think its really usefull obviously there are others brands working on that. The thing is what do we call technology?
They have resources to make a real progress in our live and they just want to entertain us. what is a mainstream is not always what we really need. think it over….
Hi Jose,
Nice comment! Just a note about “strapped,” though. It can be confusing because it has so many meanings, but in the context of “strapped for cash,” it means low on money. Also, like you mentioned, a strap can be a piece of fabric or something similar that allows you to hold or wear something.
Anyhow, nice job!
Ryan
Actually I am not an Apple fan, in my opinion Sony us the best company, I love Sony and the devices they have. For example the new Xperia Z2: the camera is awesome, and also the software and hardware. Also I prefer Samsung than Apple, the devices are better and the design is not the best for apple in my opinion of course, but I still preferring Sony. So I’m not exited about the new Apple watch, I don’t like this type of devices and I don’t see on them a big functionality.I’m excited about the new devices of Sony, starting with the new phones, as I said before the Xperia Z2 is a phone very nice, it is waterproof, a camera with 20,7 MP and a lot of specification that are great. Also Sony is the owner of the Play Station, for mi the best gaming system, so it’s very exciting to know about the newest devices and consoles of Sony.Of course, we are more interested in technology, in the modern times we can live with two shirts and two pants. but we can’t live without a cellphone or a computer with us, we have to be checking our e-mail, Facebook or another social network. My favorite piece of technology is the cell phone, the newest are like a small computer, we can do there everything we want, surfing the net, check the email, spend time on Facebook, do quickly a homework, play games. It is the best, it help us to do everything quickly and obviously to communicate to each other to any part of the world.
(I have to look for the definitions )
Sorry in the first line, I wrote: us, but it was: is
Hi Brayan,
OK, nice. If you get the definitions, you can add them to your comment or comment here again.
Also, if we’re going REALLY basic, I guess we could live with one shirt and one pair of pants, right? Why get all fancy with two? 🙂
Cater:1-to provide food, service, etc., as for a party or wedding
2-to provide or supply what amuses, is desired, or gives pleasure, comfort, etc. (usually followed by to or for)
Strapped
In financial need. Ex; We are strapped for cash.
Wearable “devices”
Are miniature electronic devices that are worn by the bearer under, with it on top of clothing
Fanfare: a short and lively sounding of trumpets / a short piece of music played loudly with trumpets especially to announce that someone is arriving.
Profit: to get an advantage or benefit from something.
Replenish: to fill or build up something again.
I am not an Apple fan but I see very interesting for all that has the new Apple watch and I think so, smartwatches will become mainstream by its applications, also I think so, it is true that young are very aware of new technologies and obviously they prefer to be spending the money in order to buy the best technology.
Hey Milena,
Thanks for your comment!
Well I like apple devices but I don’t consider myself a big fan. For example the new Apple watch is useless for me, it makes no sense, because it has the same functions as an iphone, the difference is that you can put it on your wrist.
Vocabulary:
cater=to supply, to provide
trend=tendency
spot=place, site
I’m not a kind of fan, but actually I like apple products. I have had a really good experience with my iPod, it has been with me for almost 7 years, I’m not kidding. I prefer quality when I buy any device, that’s why I like Apple’s gadgets.
I have always been interested in new computers, the new features as: hard drive capacities, card video performance, memory RAM, etc. Because each time is more necessary count on an much better computer to do my work, for example for created a 3D model of houses to my customers I must have a better computer than mine.
Hi Luis,
Nice comment. I also agree that Apple is good, since I still use an iPod I got 10 years ago, along with other products in the meantime. I think it’s important to not get too caught up in the hype, though, since in the end it’s just another product, and it won’t actually make us better people, haha!
And if you need a good computer for your job, it sounds like you should talk to Ruben, since I guess he made his own?
See you in class,
Ryan
Hi!
Leadership: the action of
leading a group of people or an organization.
Trends:a general direction
in which something is developing or changing.
Display: exhibition of
(something) in a place where it can be easily seen.
I’m not an apple fan,
However, I like the new Apple Watch, in my opinion, the apple products generally are excellent all their characteristics are very useful.
Well, I love the cell phones Because, This is the technology that help us, every day to communicate with our family, friends also to make a business.
Hi Karina,
Thanks for your comment. Sorry I take away the love of your life for three hours during class, but at least I take everyone’s phones, so you can all suffer withdrawal equally, haha! 🙂
Ryan
Hi, About my opinion of Apple, I’m not Apple fan, but i think that the new Cell phones are great, the apple watch is a good idea for many people that practices different sports and is more comfortable. It have the same apps or funtions that others Iphones, but about the opinion the other people is a bit difficult for it’s size.
Apple is a big company, they create every day a new technologies for different markets.
My cell phone is Samsung, but if i will have an opportunity maybe i would like to buy iphone watch Sport, it not an essential for me, but i like to do excersisces, running, hiking, pilates, so i think it will be a great shopping for me. I want one, sure.
Today is very normal at the society all young people want to have the best technology in cellphones, they only thing in that devices.
My words are:
Wearable: is when you use somenting. Ex; I haven’t got anything wearable for the wedding.
Sort; is put in order something. Ex; Are you finished sorting those cards into alphabetic order.
Replenish.
Is when you fill out a test or application.
Thank you 🙂
Hi Helen,
Nice comment, and welcome back from your trip!
I’m glad to see that you’re using shorter, clearer sentences, since we talked about that in the last course. This time I’m noticing a lot of improvement.
Everything about your comment is understandable, but there are still quite a few errors with structure, vocabulary, etc. Things like “people that practices” or “it have” are incorrect because of the verbs, and “i” and “Cell” are incorrect because of capitalization. There are also some missing subjects or incorrect words (“thing” instead of “think”).
So, like I said, I could understand it all, but just review everything and double-check your comments before posting. If you want to edit or change anything, you can also talk to me.
Thanks!
Ryan
Hi Ryan, it’s better late than never…
I’m not an Apple fan, but I think the new Apple watch is very interesting and is a great invention for people who love technology; for me that’s not, I prefer other things, really, I’m not a technology fan because many times people become useless and dependent on these gadgets.
The words are:
Worn: damaged as a result of much use.
Entirely. completely,
Cater: provide something.
Hi Ana,
Thanks for your comment–welcome!
Ryan
Hi
Hi Ricard,
Nice job!
Chief rival: Is like the archrival of a company, maybe the opponent with most powerfull things to compete.
Profit: Is the money or the advantage that you receive when you discover or made up something new.
Wearable: Is the new things for the company that are most usefull.
Well im not an iphone fan, for me the tecnology is equitative between Samsumg and Apple, obviusly the Apple company is better but not too much, only in some aspects. Maybe the apple watch will not be usefull compare to the cellphone, the tecnology trying to make us laziest.
My favorite piece of tecnology is the smartphone, it help us to organize our life and make it easy.
