Week 6 Homework – Marriage
Hi everyone!
As usual, everyone is welcome to post comments and participate in the discussion this week, even though it’s written for the class I’m teaching now. So, I hope to hear your comments!
Let’s start with yesterday’s Quote of the Day:
“I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.”
-Rita Rudner
So, the quote is a bit of a joke, but it’ll introduce our topic for this week: dating and marriage. We talked about it in class yesterday because there are some pages in our book (p. 145-147) that deal with these issues. Here are your instructions:
HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 6
1. Read pages 145-147 in the book.
2. Think about some of the issues from those pages. Then, choose 3 of the following questions. Write at least a short paragraph to answer each question completely. You can answer more than three questions, but you have to answer at least three completely to get full credit.
QUESTIONS (CHOOSE 3):
A. Are you married? If so, why did you decide to get married? If not, do you think you’ll ever get married? Why or why not?
B. Think about different marriages you know about, both happy and unhappy. What do you think are the secrets to a happy marriage? What advice could you give to someone wanting to have a strong marriage?
C. The article on page 145 talks about arranged marriages. Obviously, these are uncommon in Costa Rica, but they’re fairly common in other parts of the world. What do you think would be some advantages and disadvantages of an arranged marriage?
D. The chart on the bottom of page 145 shows the average age people get married in different countries. Where do you think Costa Rica would be on that graph? In your opinion, what is the ideal age to get married? To start dating? To have children?
E. Have you been to many weddings? If so, what were they like? Page 146 has information about marriage customs in different countries. How are some of these similar to and different from traditions in Costa Rica?
F. Page 147 has information about how people met. If you have a spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend, tell a bit about how you two met. Was it “love at first sight”?
Good luck, and tell me if you have any questions!

What do you think would be some advantages and disadvantages of an arranged marriage?
This type of marital union was popular in the past. when the father of the bride received money or land from the groom family especially if they were rich but it depends on the social class and also of the culture, however nobody took into account bride’s mind.
What did she feel?
what about if she was falling in love of someone else?
It didn’t matter at all. I think that was really unfair for those who faced that situation therefore Nowadays the only who has that right is the couple.
what is the ideal age to get married? To start dating? To have children?
this is a real debate. some couple prefer moving in together first then when they feel enough confident. they might get married It doesn’t depends on the age, in fact it’s more related with your previous experiences. there are young people very responsible and mature who are able to handle this kind of relationship and also bringing up children, otherwise if you are older obviously you have had the chance to grow up and see the things from diferent ways.
Have you been to many weddings? If so, what were they like?
Well I’ve gone to many weddings most of them beautiful ceremonies a lot of people and also good parties. But something that catch my attention is how different are weddings in other countries like in japan where the bride arrives in a boat and also indu’s weddings because of the luxurious bride’s dress.
Hi Jose,
Very nice answers–thanks! For the second one, though, you kind of avoided the question…or do you think there’s no such thing as an ideal age to get married?
